Random Safety Tip

New AHA CPR Guidelines

There are new American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. The major changes in the 2005 guidelines recommendations for lay rescuers for CPR are the following:

If alone with an unresponsive infant or child, give 5 cycles of compressions and ventilations (rescue breaths) (about 2 minutes) before leaving the child to phone 911. Instead of providing 1 minute of care before calling 911.
Use 30:2 compression-to-ventilation ratio for all victims. Instead of 5:1 ratio for infant and child.
Take 5 to 10 seconds to check for presence or absence of breathing in the unresponsive infant or child.
Do not try to open the airway using a jaw thrust for injured victims - use the head tilt-chin lift for all victims.
Take a normal (not a deep) breath before giving a rescue breath to a child.
First signs a child is in respiratory distress
Give each breath over 1 second. Instead of 1 to 2 seconds. Each breath should make the chest rise.
If the victim's chest does not rise when the first rescue breath is delivered, perform the head tilt-chin lift again before giving the second breath.
Do NOT check for signs of circulation. After delivery of 2 rescue breaths, immediately begin chest compressions (and cycles of compressions and rescue breaths). Airway. Breathing. Compressions & rescue breaths (instead of checking for circulation).
No teaching of rescue breathing without chest compressions.
For children, use 1 or 2 hands to perform chest compressions and compress at the nipple line; for infants, compress with 2 fingers on the breastbone just below the nipple line. Instead of only one hand for child and 1 finger width below the nipple line for infant.
Actions for relief of choking (severe airway obstruction) have been simplified. Rescuers should act if they see signs of severe obstruction: poor air exchange and increased breathing difficulty, a silent cough, cyanosis, or inability to speak or breath. Rescuers should ask the victim 1 question: "Are you choking?" If the victim nods yes, help is needed.

Be Safe At Your School or Day Care

Pediatric First Aid and CPR Class

We teach and certify schools and day cares how to prevent, recognize and respond during many accidents and emergencies.

Teachers and staff at schools and day cares are required to get certified, but in addition, they want to leave their certification class confident in their emergency skills should an accident really occur in their facility.

Our Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification class will show you a video on First Aid and CPR. Then spend two to three hours practicing CPR rescue breathing and Heimlich on infant and child mannequins.

We also teach accident prevention, for example, leaving behind a food list to eliminate choking accidents. Our CPR-First Aid Instructors bring materials with us to make your class convenient, including leaving materials behind for your references. Our CPR-First Aid class summary summarizes the class.

Many schools and day cares contact Baby Be Safe for a Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification class led by smart and pleasant instructors accommodating their busy schedules.

Testimonial

I just wanted to write and tell you that I really appreciated the class at Willy Bee's. I learned a lot and I feel much more confident that I could handle an emergency without panicking. I keep the materials by my desk and make a point of browsing them every week or so just to refresh my memory so I can be prepared if something should happen (God forbid). Also, it was much less intimidating than a class at a hospital, and very reasonably priced -- worth every penny, as far as I'm concerned!
